The Music of Bell Ringing: So Diverse
Bells and churches are inseparable. Bells can be heard before services, during celebrations and holidays, and as a harbinger of significant events. This is precisely why various types and characteristics of bell ringing have emerged.
In the modern world, there are only three main types of Christian bell ringing. These include Orthodox bell ringing, Catholic bell ringing, and carillon ringing.
Orthodox bell ringing is based on the rhythm and timbral interactions of the bells, which typically number between five and twelve in a belfry. The ringing is initiated by the swinging clapper of the bell, which is forged according to special rules. Harmony of sound, otherwise known as splendor, is of great importance. The latter is achieved through the careful selection of the bells themselves, as well as the skill of the bell ringer.
According to the canons of Orthodoxy, there are four types of bell ringing. These include:
- Blagovest, which marks the beginning of the church service;
- Perebr, which can be heard during funerals;
- Perezvon, which is the repeated ringing of each bell individually;
- Trezvon, which has no restrictions related to church regulations and is, accordingly, the most complex of all.
Bells for Catholic ringing are equipped with a counterweight and lightweight clappers, which, striking the rotating or swinging bell, provide the fundamental tone. Overtones, however, should be few. A belfry can have between two and six bells. Such ringing generally depends on the number of bells and how strongly they swing or rotate during the ringing; therefore, the quality of Catholic ringing does not depend on the skill of the bell ringer.
The bells in a belfry for cariole ringing usually form a set for a scale of several full octaves. The bell ringer plays a melody from notes using a device similar to an organ keyboard. When making bells, craftsmen strive to eliminate overtones or significantly reduce their duration. Equipping the bell tower with automatic control based on an electromagnetic mechanism would produce a carillon or chimes. The sound would be completely incomparable to church bells understanding the difference between the Orthodox rites of ringing and the Western bell-ringing tradition, it’s easy to appreciate the significant differences in the requirements for the manufacture and selection of bells for the creation of complete peals.
