Australia is the smallest continent on the planet. The land area it occupies is only five percent; the continent itself is located in the southern hemisphere of the planet.
Australia is washed on three sides by one Indian Ocean and two seas from the east: Tasman and Coral.
The first to visit and discover these lands were sailors from Holland; therefore, this continent was initially called “New Holland”. Only later, a navigator from England, having circumnavigated the mainland, proposed a name – Terra Australis. But his request was not immediately approved. Much later, the governor of one of the states named this continent Australia, and at his request to the Colonial Affairs Ministers of England, this name was officially confirmed in documents.
Oceania and Australia – the mysterious southern land
The capital of Australia is considered to be the city of Canberra. Its origin is interesting because it is created in an unnatural way. The capital was located symmetrically from Melbourne and Sydney in order to put an end to and give the go-ahead to the dispute between these cities that encroached on the status of the capital. The layout turned out to be very successful, and thanks to the highlights of the landscape, the new capital became an exemplary example of a new direction in the field of construction and architecture. The population of the capital is three hundred eighty thousand people, which allows you to tour the city in one day.
Australia has the largest coral reef in the world. In fact, this continent is one state, the official name of which is the Australian Alliance. The flat plane occupies 90% of the entire landmass of the continent above the sea, but there are also mountains whose height reaches 1, 500 kilometers.
The Australian Alps are the highest mountains on this continent. The continent is poor in the presence of rivers, one of the longest is the Murray River. Rivers are replenished with water due to rains in June, and later they can dry out or become shallow, transforming into depressions, the bottom of which is covered with salt. The mainland is dominated by three climate zones, which are characterized by differences in air temperature, dryness and humidity.
